Sharing the Joy of Music at Forest Heights Elementary

Some of our Edmonton Accordion Society members have been spending their lunch hours in a very special way—bringing the joy of accordion music to the Grade 6 German Immersion class at Forest Heights Elementary School.

Since April 15, 2026, three of our volunteer instructors have been visiting the school each week, joined by the classroom teacher, who is also an accordion player. Together, they’ve been guiding a lively group of about 15 students through Palmer Hughes Book 1, giving them a solid introduction to playing the accordion.

What makes this program especially heartwarming is the enthusiasm coming from the students themselves. They’ve been practicing over the lunch hour, learning new skills, and building confidence with every session. One student even shared that her parents plan to buy her an accordion so she can keep playing beyond the program—a wonderful sign of how meaningful this experience has been.

The program will continue until June 10, 2026, and we’re thrilled to see such excitement for accordion music in the next generation.

Calling All Accordion Players: Mentors Needed

As interest grows, we’re looking to build a small network of mentors who would enjoy supporting young, eager players. If you’re an accordionist who loves the idea of encouraging the next wave of musicians, we’d love to hear from you.

Please reach out to our president, June McNeil, to learn more about how you can get involved.
